A number of late-medieval hand-held guns still survive, though without their wooden stocks; this 15th-century example was almost certainly made in Flanders. (Castle Museum, Ghent; author’s photograph)

THE BATTLE OF CASTILLON

The town of Castillon was strongly fortified, though in an old-fashioned manner. Beyond its suburbs stood the substantial Benedictine Priory of Saint-Florent on slightly higher ground. A detailed map of the area made in 1762–63 shows the priory in a clearing surrounded on three sides by woods, which was almost certainly also the case in 1453. The small chapel of Notre-Dame de Colles on the northern side of the Rauzan ford also formed a separate part of this priory.
